Thickened toe nails can be discoloured, horn shaped, are difficult to cut and can be painful when wearing footwear.
Thickened nails can be caused by:
Ill fitting footwear causing pressure to the nails,
Underlying health conditions such as diabetes or psoriasis,
Age,
Poor foot care / neglect.
Thickened toe nails require regular maintenance to reduce pain, reduce risk of wound development to the skin under the nails and maintain mobility.
Treatment:
As podiatrists we are able to offer treatments to maintain and reduce thickened nails through treatments such as Mechanical nail reduction,
Burring the nail to reduce thickness,
If needed, onwards referrals for nail surgery into the NHS.
In all cases, if needed, we can send a direct referral to your GP, or into Podiatry in the NHS,
We have seen it all at Torbay Podiatry!ry!
